20 Yard Dumpster Rental in Columbia, SC
The 20 yard is the most-rented container in Columbia and it earns that. It is the largest size that still loads comfortably by hand and still fits a normal suburban driveway.
Specifications
| Dimensions | about 22' long x 8' wide x 4.5' high |
|---|---|
| Capacity | roughly 6 to 8 pickup truck loads |
| Weight allowance | typically 3 to 4 tons |
| Driveway space needed | about 42 feet of length including truck clearance |
Those 4.5-foot walls are the reason this size dominates. You can throw a cabinet door or a bag of demo debris over the side without a ramp, which is not true of a 30.
Good fits
- A full roof replacement on an average single-family house
- A kitchen remodel including cabinets and countertops
- Clearing a two-car garage plus an attic
- A large estate cleanout
- Siding or window replacement
- Significant storm or tree debris
Roofing: size on weight, not volume
This is the single most common sizing error in Columbia, and roofing is where it bites.
A 20 yard holds the volume of a tear-off up to roughly 30 squares. But shingles are heavy — architectural shingles run roughly 350 to 450 pounds per square, and a second or third layer multiplies that. A 2,500 square foot roof carrying three layers of architectural shingle can pass five tons, which is past the allowance on a 20.
When you call, give us the roof's square footage and the number of layers. We will size on weight and tell you if you need a dedicated roofing container instead. Getting this wrong means an overweight load the truck cannot legally lift, and a second trip charge.
Driveway fit
A 20 needs about 22 feet for the container plus roughly 20 more for the truck to position and tilt, and around 20 feet of overhead clearance to raise the bed.
Newer subdivisions in Irmo, Blythewood, Chapin and Lexington handle this easily. Older in-town Columbia neighborhoods — Shandon, Rosewood, Elmwood Park, Earlewood — frequently do not, because the driveways are short and the tree canopy is low. That is where street placement and a temporary encroachment permit come in.
Ask us about plywood under the wheels. On older concrete and on asphalt in a Carolina summer, it is worth the minute it takes.
