40 Yard Dumpster Rental in Columbia, SC
The 40 yard is the largest standard roll-off available. It is a commercial and demolition container, and for most residential projects it is the wrong answer even when the volume seems to justify it.

Eight-foot walls change everything
You cannot meaningfully load a 40 yard by hand. At eight feet, throwing debris over the side is not realistic for sustained work. This size assumes one of:
- A loader, skid steer or excavator
- A debris chute from an upper floor
- A crew working through the rear barn doors
- A raised loading position
If none of those apply to your project, a 30 yard will serve you better and cost less.
Good fits
- Commercial build-outs and tenant improvements
- Structural demolition
- Industrial and warehouse clear-outs
- Multi-unit property turnover
- Large-volume light material — insulation, packaging, roofing felt, siding
The weight trap
This is where the 40 catches people. The volume roughly quadruples versus a 10 yard, but the weight allowance only rises to around 5 or 6 tons. Fill a 40 with anything dense and you blow past the tonnage with the container half empty, then pay overage on every ton.
A 40 is for high-volume, low-density material. If your debris is heavy, you want more containers, not a bigger one.
Access
Beyond the 42 feet of length, a 40 needs a genuinely clear approach: a wide turning path, firm ground, and roughly 20 feet of overhead clearance for the truck to raise the bed. Commercial lots usually manage this; residential driveways frequently do not.
Describe the site when you call. If a 40 cannot be placed safely we will say so and suggest a workable alternative rather than sending a truck that has to turn around.
