Cayce is a city in its own right, and like Irmo it has a boundary quirk worth knowing: it sits across two counties.

Cayce spans Lexington and Richland counties

Cayce is primarily a Lexington County city but its limits extend into Richland County. That means two different county authorities can be relevant depending on the specific address — and neither of them is the City of Columbia.

The Columbia encroachment permit does not govern Cayce streets. Cayce is a separate municipality with its own right-of-way authority. For street placement, that is a City of Cayce question.

As always, a container on your own driveway or private property needs no permit from anyone.

SCDOT applies independently of all of this. Knox Abbott Drive, Charleston Highway and other main routes through Cayce may be state-maintained, which adds a state encroachment permit on top of the city requirement.

Cayce mixes older established neighborhoods near the river and the Avenues with newer development further out. The older sections carry the familiar constraints: shorter driveways, narrower approaches, mature trees over the drop path. Check for about 20 feet of overhead clearance before booking a 20 yard or larger.

Properties near the Congaree have an additional consideration — ground can be soft, particularly after heavy rain. A loaded roll-off is extremely heavy, and soft ground is how containers end up stuck and lawns end up ruined. If the only placement is on grass or unpaved ground, tell us and we will advise.
